EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
