The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.
