Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the right to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
